Amazon has confirmed plans to build a fourth fulfillment center in Delaware off DuPont Highway (Route 13) south of New Castle.

“We’re excited to continue our growth and investment in Delaware with a new fulfillment center in New Castle that will serve our customers across the state. This site will create thousands of new job opportunities – with highly competitive pay, benefits from day-one, and training programs for in-demand jobs,” Amazon spokesperson Jenna Hilzenrath stated.

Jonathan Starkey, spokesman for Gov. John Carney issued the following:

“Throughout this Covid-19 crisis, Governor Carney and his team have continued working hard to attract good jobs to Delaware. There are good reasons for businesses to invest in our state. Delaware has the lowest taxes for families in the region, a science-based workforce, world-class beaches, and easy access to major cities. We think Delaware will be well-positioned to keep competing for new, good jobs as we recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Construction is continuing on a fulfillment center at the former GM Boxwood site off Route 141 near Newport.

The Delaware Business Times(limited page views) reported the center will be built at the site of the former Blue Diamond amusement park off Hamburg Road near Routes 1 and 13.

The site is the home of a small United Parcel Service center. The Business Times reported that the site was recently sold to the Stoltz development interests. The site has suitable zoning, which should reduce land use issues.

Amazon has been leasing space throughout the Delaware Valley while adding greenfield sites in an effort to keep up with the demand that went into overdrive during the pandemic.

Developers originally submitted plans to New Castle County for a multi-story fulfillment center similar to those in urban areas and other crowded locations. The final plan was more in line with typical distribution center footprints.
